Buying guide

Compare what’s inside the cans and trays

A cheap can may be smaller, and a tray pack may count each portion separately. Start with the food and texture your cat eats.

Which brands should you compare first?

Purina, Hill’s, Royal Canin, and Iams are commonly recommended by U.S. veterinary practices using WSAVA’s food-selection criteria. Those criteria examine nutrition expertise, formulation, quality control, and research.

WSAVA doesn’t certify brands, and this shortlist doesn’t establish that every other food is unsuitable. Choose a complete-and-balanced cat food appropriate for your cat’s life stage and health needs, then compare prices for that recipe.

Count the net weight of the whole case

Multiply containers by net ounces in each. Twenty-four 3 oz cans contain 72 oz; twelve 5.5 oz cans contain 66 oz. Twice as many cans can hold only a little more food.

For split trays, check whether the listing’s count means outer twin packs or individual portions. Use the total net food weight to compare prices.

Check whether it is a full meal or a topper

Read the nutritional-adequacy statement. AAFCO distinguishes complete meals from products intended only for supplemental feeding. A topper, broth, or treat isn’t interchangeable with a complete meal.

The life stage matters too. Check growth suitability for a kitten rather than picking an adult-only recipe by price.

Match texture and the flavor mix

Pâté, cuts, and shreds in gravy are different formats. If your cat reliably eats one, start there. In a variety case, check how many containers of each flavor you’ll get.

For a new recipe, a few cans can be a more useful trial than a full case.

Compare the cost of the daily portion

For the same recipe, price per ounce is a useful shortcut. Across recipes, also check calories per container and the portion you feed; equal-size cans need not supply equal calories.

Use your cat’s feeding plan to estimate containers per day, then multiply by price per container. Keep open-food storage and refrigeration instructions in mind when choosing a can size.
